026 - Cape Cod Canadians

June 21, 2018

Narnia - Why do they call it Cape Cod, I didn't get any cod.

Kathryn - Cape Cod is a special slice of america. If it were pizza Cape Cod would be a gourmet fancy slice. Crust made of sandy vacant beaches with dunes bubbling up at the edge. The sauce would be the culture of Provincetown, one of the warmest and gentlest places we have enjoyed - being queer in P-town is not only normal it is predominant and these are our people. Now for the fixings, owls, coyotes, foxes, bunnies, horses, sea birds, and whales are all common sights. And to top it all off Provincetown has more restaurants and art galleries than any other town of it's size that I have ever seen. This is a slice of america that you can really sink your teeth into and relish; I only wish they had turned the heat up and cooked the damn thing a bit more. My slice was cold in the middle of May.

Catherine -

America, it’s been fun.

Your parks are beautiful. Stunning.

Your citizens are wonderful, and your music is the best.

Your firmly held attitude towards gun laws is creepy.

Your liquor laws are confusing and recycle deplorable.

After our journey through over 30 states, 20,000 kilometers and 125 campgrounds I am ready to come home. Though I will be farther away physically from where I used to live, I have this new-found patriotism for Canada, my home.

With our travels exploring the USA I have discovered an appreciation for wild flowers, birds, gorgeous parks and wine on Sunday (or at all).

I have a new appreciation for the magnitude of the entrenched attitude of the right to bear arms. The fear if one isn’t carrying a gun and the other person is. The shock when people learn we do not have a gun in our RV. “What would you do if someone broke into your RV at night?” We were told we should have flare guns, bear spray, or a small handgun at the very least.

The attitude of protect yourself and your property at all costs, even if it is someone’s life. This attitude will not go away for a very long time. A new generation will need to come forth and as we travelled through the US, in this year alone, there have been 6,681 gun-related deaths and 135 mass shootings (www.gunviolencearchive.org) so far. I wonder who will be the first to hand in their guns. To no longer bear arms. To no longer need to buy insurance to protect yourself in case you shoot someone by mistake. Very few people have the courage to make that step. The firearm is the US persons security blanket. The stress to remove the blanket is too great for most.

Narnia - Thanks for all the rolls in the dirt America! I never knew how much I LOVED exploring until I met you.
